To mark ’40 years of linear key valve interlocking’, we sat down with Tan Sri Moh Wung Sing, Managing Director of Multi-Engineering & Management, for an inspiring conversation about a partnership built on trust, innovation, and shared success. Since the early 2000s, Multi-Engineering Management has been a cornerstone of Sofis’ presence in Malaysia and beyond, helping drive technical breakthroughs and long-term growth across the region. This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on more than two decades of collaboration and to look forward to exciting possibilities that lie ahead. What began as a simple supplier-customer relationship has evolved into something much deeper: a long-standing partnership marked by mutual respect, aligned values, and a shared drive for excellence. Over the years, this alliance has not only enabled many successful projects but has also shaped the valve interlocking industry in Southeast Asia.
A man on a mission
Tan Sri Moh Wung Sing is more than just a business partner. As the founder and CEO of Multi-Engineering, he is a pioneer in Malaysia’s industrial landscape. In 2021, he was awarded the honorary title of “Tan Sri” by the King of Malaysia, a national recognition for his outstanding contributions to industry and society. “I entered the valve interlocking industry in the late ’90s,” he recalls. “Malaysia already had more than a century of oil history, and I saw a clear need for maintaining and upgrading existing valve interlock systems. That’s where my journey began.” With a deep understanding of the country’s industrial infrastructure and a passion for advancing safety and reliability, Tan Sri Moh quickly made a name for himself in the sector. His entrepreneurial spirit and hands-on approach have been central to Multi-Engineering’s ability to respond quickly to market needs, deliver innovative solutions, and build lasting client relationships.
First contact with Sofis
His initial connection with Sofis (then Smith Flow Control) came in the early 2000s. “What immediately struck me was how innovative their products were,” he says. “The coded linear keys and the way they were integrated directly into valve systems, that was unlike anything else.” The novelty and effectiveness of the technology made an instant impression. At a time when many systems still relied on outdated safety protocols, Smith Flow Control represented a new standard in mechanical interlocking, one built on engineering precision and operational safety. There was also a strong personal connection. “The SFC team, consisting of Mike Smith, Mike D’Anzieri, and the salespeople, was highly engaged and professional. Their approach gave me confidence that this was not only a well-run company, but one with real vision.” It was this combination of cutting-edge products and a people-first approach that laid the foundation for what would become a thriving partnership.
From initial orders to long-term partnership
Things got serious with a major project for Petronas Gas Berhad, involving more than 2,000 interlocks. Many more projects followed. “Sofis has consistently supported us, technically and commercially. Thanks to that support, we’ve secured numerous projects with clients like Gas Malaysia, BLNG, and Petrofac.” This initial success not only validated the potential of the collaboration but also opened doors to a series of high-profile projects. Multi-Engineering’s ability to deliver complex solutions on time and with precision, backed by Sofis’ dependable engineering, became a winning formula across the oil and gas industry. Which projects stand out the most? “The PGB rejuvenation programs, such as Alexis Phases 1 through 7, the valve interlock upgrades on Repsol’s Northern Platform, and the NOV-Petrobras Buzio project, are milestones that represent the strength of our collaboration.” These milestones reflect not only the scale and impact of the work but also the ability of both companies to adapt, evolve, and deliver in highly demanding environments.
The strength of the partnership
For Tan Sri Moh, the foundation is reliability: “Sofis has always been consistent in terms of quality, delivery, and support. They maintain detailed customer records, respond quickly, and are proactive in their thinking.” He sees Sofis as a partner that continues to evolve. “They’ve grown into a forward-looking company that keeps investing in innovation. Their products are originally designed, grounded in R&D. That’s what sets them apart.” This emphasis on continuous improvement and a customer-focused approach has helped both companies thrive in an industry that demands nothing less than excellence. Whether it’s responding to urgent technical challenges or exploring new technologies, the partnership has remained strong and future-ready.
Navigating a changing industry
The industry is not what it used to be. “These days, customers are more price-sensitive, although quality is still critical,” he notes. “As for mechanical interlocks, they remain important, especially where legislation mandates them.” He also sees major opportunities. “With the rise of alternative energy sources, there’s a real chance for Sofis to expand. Their products can serve new markets, as long as they continue to meet the highest standards of quality and safety.” From hydrogen facilities to offshore wind operations, the energy landscape is shifting rapidly. For companies like Sofis and Multi-Engineering, adapting to this shift requires not just innovative products but also a deep understanding of regulatory trends, environmental standards, and new customer expectations.
A personal touch
Outside of work, Tan Sri Moh Wung Sing is active in Rotary International and used to enjoy off-road driving, basketball, and badminton. “These days, I mostly play golf,” he says with a smile. “And I enjoy the quiet life.” Tan Sri Moh remains energetic and engaged. His involvement in community initiatives reflects a commitment to giving back, the same principle that has guided his professional life.
A final message to Sofis
For Tan Sri Moh, Sofis is more than a supplier; it’s an integral part of his business life. “Sofis is woven into my daily work. I wish the entire team continued success and prosperity. Your products are creative, well-engineered, and valuable. Keep building strong relationships and take pride in your role as a market leader.” As the partnership looks ahead to the next chapter, one thing is clear: trust, innovation, and shared vision will remain the guiding principles, just as they have been for the past 20+ years.
