What started as a detour from an IT career became a defining journey in valve interlocking. Darren Trowsdale’s 23 years at Sofis reflect a legacy of loyalty, technical growth, and dedication to problem-solving in a rapidly evolving industry. As Sofis marks 40 years of linear key valve interlocking, Darren’s story embodies the values and vision that made that milestone possible.
A career that started with a detour
Darren didn’t plan on a future in engineering. “After completing a Level 3 NVQ in IT Installation and Support, I aspired to become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer,” he recalls. But when he learned he was about to become a father, priorities shifted. “With my first child on the way, I needed stable work to support my family,” he says. That urgency led him to apply to local companies, including Smith Flow Control.
A gut feeling, and a job offer
After applying, things moved quickly. “I had an interview with Chris Tonks, and we immediately clicked. After a bit of persuasion, I was lucky enough to join his team.” What began as a practical choice turned into something much more. “I’ve stayed all these years because I truly believe in what we do, and because of the incredible people I work with every day.”
Unexpected lessons
Darren still remembers walking in on day one. “I was welcomed by Gloria, Clive, and Tony, people who made me feel part of the team right away.” But the tasks were modest: “Making coffees, collecting faxes, and trying to wrap my head around what a Document Controller actually does.” He wasn’t sure the job was for him. “What I didn’t realize at the time was how valuable that job would become. It gave me a deep understanding of our products, our customers, and their needs. An experience that laid the groundwork for my later success in sales engineering and project management.”
From analog to digital
Since Darren joined, the industry has undergone a digital shift. “The core principles and customer needs have stayed surprisingly consistent,” he says, “but the integration of digital technology and automation has been game changing. ” These innovations have helped Sofis deliver more intelligent, integrated, and reliable solutions for customers worldwide.
Career highlights that made history
Darren has played key roles in many landmark projects, including the supply of 640 FlexiDrive remote valve operator systems to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE. “That project was a major milestone for us. Over a decade later, we’re still supporting the site.” Another standout: India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. “I had a key role in securing and managing the project with Johnson Controls. Hosting a senior commander from the Indian Navy at our facility was a huge honour.” He also cites the decade-long ACG project for BP, covering multiple offshore platforms and the Sangachal Onshore Terminal. “It was one of the largest and most complex projects of my career. A defining chapter, for sure.”
What’s behind 40 years of success?
When asked what has kept Sofis going strong for four decades, Darren is clear: “It’s the people. Always has been. The company has a real talent for finding good people, investing in them, and keeping them.” That culture of development and retention, he believes, remains a competitive edge to this day.
Culture: then and now
“We’re a more professional organization today, which matches modern expectations,” Darren says. “But the core spirit hasn’t changed. Back then, the office was relaxed but focused, everyone was committed to solving problems. That determination is still part of our DNA.”
Values that drive success
Sofis has grown, but its foundations remain intact. “Problem-solving has always been central, figuring things out with a practical, customer-first mindset.” Equally important is the human side. “We supported each other back then, shared knowledge, and took pride in our work. That same spirit still exists today.”
Mentors who shaped the journey
Darren credits key figures with helping shape his path. “Chris Tonks taught me what it means to be responsible and accountable,” he says. “Adrian Brown is someone I admire for his calm, thoughtful approach. And Mike D’Anzieri, our original MD, backed me when others might not have. That belief meant a lot.”
Proud of progress
What’s he most proud of? “Our determination to succeed,” he says. “If you’d told me years ago, we’d be where we are now, I wouldn’t have believed it. But here we are, and that’s thanks to the team.”
What’s next for valve interlocking?
Darren sees big potential in digital transformation. “Real-time data on valve and key positions can prevent shutdowns and support predictive maintenance.”
He’s also excited about wireless systems, cloud logging, and smarter permit-to-work processes. “The Sofis Key Management System was originally imagined as more than a key manager—a full operational hub. That vision still has room to grow.”
Looking ahead
What excites Darren about Sofis’ direction? “We’re balancing innovation with a people-first culture. That combination, technology and teamwork, is what will drive the next phase of growth.”
Three words that say it all
When asked to describe his Sofis journey in just three words, Darren answers without hesitation: “Versatile. Trusted. Passionate.”
Back to playing golf
Outside of work, Darren is chasing another goal: getting back into golf. “After a 10-year break, I’ve started playing again. I was a 10 handicap, now I’m aiming for scratch within five years. That’s the plan.”
